Intro to Color
The Creation of the Tourist Façade
Over spring break I was able to take my friend home with me to Seattle. She had never been there before, so we set out to get the tourist must-see experiences. As we explored, I began shooting my final with color medium format film. It was my first time shooting with color film, and soon into the project my light meter died—making it an elongated process to take each and every shot. I was slowed down in my work and was forced to wait for the perfect shot to come to me. As I waited and watched my surroundings, the different dimensions of the city became clear. As a tourist, you are shown the beautiful side of the city—you see the finished product. But, this is only one aspect of the city. Behind the beautiful flowers and art, there is hard work. Locals work day in and day out to create these moments of beauty. Tourists pass over the labor and the everyday lives that are the foundation of the city without ever stopping to notice. These photos illuminate the finished façade tourists connect themselves with, as well as the hard work and the mundane moments of city life that make it all possible.
